Epic Test Code LAB2101 CLO Test (Selective Rapid Urea)

Performing Location(s)

BMC

Synonyms

CLO test, selective rapid urea

Specimen Type

Biopsy

Preferred Container

Selective Rapid Urea Agar

Storage Requirements

Selective Rapid Urea agar prior to inoculation: Refrigerated at 2-8°C

Selective Rapid Urea agar after inoculation: incubate at 34-37° C

Transportation Needs

Transport to the laboratory immediately with the completed #4 (Micro) Req

Causes for Rejection

Mislabeled or unlabeled specimen

Expired media

Limitations

For gastric biopsies only

Patients should not have taken antibiotics or bismuth salts for at least three weeks prior to endoscopy. Suppression of H.pylori by these agents makes the organism difficult to detect by any means, and re-growth of H.pylori may be patchy, leading to false negative results in the first few weeks after treatment.

A False negative Selective Rapid Urea may occur when very low numbers of H.pylori are present, or the bacterium has a patchy distribution.

An improperly transported specimen may not result in an accurate test.

A false positive reaction could result should the medium become contaminated with a urease-producing organism.
