Selective Rapid Urea (CLO Test) Specimen Collection Information (Remel)

Specimen Collection and Handling:

  1. A biopsy specimen may be taken as soon as the endoscopist has examined the stomach.
    1. The usual area to biopsy is the sump of the antrum, along the greater curve.
  2. Biopsy an area of normal-looking tissue rather than an area affected by erosions or ulceration. This is because H.pylori may be present in smaller numbers if the epithelim is eroded or the mucus layer is denuded
    1. The standard biopsy forceps will provide a specimen of sufficient size (2-3 mm diameter).
  3. If the biopsy specimen appears to be very small, it may be worthwhile taking a second biopsy and inserting both specimens into the Selective Rapid Urea Agar. Be careful not to contaminate the second specimen with blood from the first biopsy site.
  4. Unscrew the lid of the Selective Rapid Urea Agar tube.
  5. Insert the biopsy spcimen into the agar butt with a sterile applicator stick.
    1. Make Certain that the tissue is completely immersed so that it will have maximum contact with urea and selective agents in the agar.
  6. Replace the lid on the Selective Rapid Urea Agar tube.
  7. Place order in EPIC using code LAB2101
  8. Label specimen with Beaker label, which must include:
    1. Patient Name
    2. Patient Medical Records Number
    3. Date and Time the specimen was inserted.
  9. Transport to Laboratory immediately.
