Cryoprecipitate Guidelines
Cryoprecipitate
Cryoprecipitate is the cold-insoluble portion of plasma that remains after frozen plasma has been prepared. Each bag of cryoprecipitate is 10-15 ml in volume and contains 80-120 units of Factor VIII:C (procoagulant activity), 250 mg fibrinogen, 20-30% of the Factor XIII in the original unit of plasma, and 40-70% of the Factor VIII:vWF (von Willebrand factor) in the original unit of plasma. Cryoprecipitate is indicated as a second-line therapy for the treatment of Von Willebrand’s disease, Hemophilia A (Factor VIII deficiency), Factor XIII deficiency and either congenital or acquired fibrinogen deficiency, including that caused by DIC, only if virus-inactivated factor products are not available. Cryoprecipitate has also been commonly used intraoperatively as "fibrin glue."
