Leuko-Reduced Blood Products

All red cell and apheresis platelet units currently supplied by the American Red Cross are prestorage leukoreduced products, which have a white cell count of less than 5 x 106. It is presumed that the exclusive use of prestorage leukodepleted products will reduce the occurrence of febrile transfusion reactions. Other potential benefits of an exclusively leukoreduced inventory include: decreased infection risk, decreased frequency of platelet transfusion refractoriness, decreased immunosuppression or immune stimulation, and decreased risk of leukoagglutinin reactions.
