Additional Information
If a delay in transportation is expected, the specimen may be fixed with Saccamano solution (Cytolyt Fixative). However, the addition of fixative will render the specimen unsatisfactory for culture or send out test.
A post bronchoscopy sputum sometimes yields more diagnostic material than a pre-bronchoscopy specimen.
A cell block will be made from clotted material
Apecial stains may be performed to detect organisms, (GMS stain for Pneumocystis).

Other Requirements
A completed cytology requisition is required, including pertinent patien information. Include admitting diagnosism past history of cancer, clinical impression and symptoms.
Infections diseases suspected and special stains requested should be specified.
Rush specimens require pathologist approval.
