Additional Information
Transferrin (siderophilin) serves to transport iron in the blood to the iron deposits in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow as well as to the iron-consuming organs, especially the haemopoietic tissues. Synthesis of transferrin in the liver is influenced by iron metabolism: iron deficiency results in a rise in synthesis and thus in increasing serum concentrations whereas in iron loaded systems synthesis is low. The determination of serum transferrin is therefore used for diagnosing latent and manifest iron deficiency and iron overload
