Limitations

Bone or heavily calcified tissue cannot be cut

Tissues dominated by fat are technicaly difficult and may not be amenable to frozen section

Fixed tissues are difficult technically to manage for frozen section

Additional Information

Contraindications:

Tissue is consumed in the process of frozen section. Tiny critical specimens (for example, possible breast carcinomas less than 5mm in diameter) sometimes are best not risked.

The freezing process may distort lymphoid as well as other tissues; therefore, for suspected lymphoma, it is advisable to await proper fixation of the lymph node and paraffin sections for definitive diagnosis.

 

Other Requirements:

Direct communication must occur between physician and pathologist. This is a regulatory agency requirement.
