Specimens not delivered to laboratory within 1 hour should be refrigerated.

Transportation Needs

Causes for Rejection

Mislabeled or unlabeled specimen

Specimen too viscous to analyze

Tubes without heparin may clot and lead to processing issues or rejection

EDTA, citrate, or oxalate

> 2 hours at Room Temperature

> 4 days Refrigerated

 

Limitations

In collection of ascitic fluid, the localization of the catheter is likely to affect the chemistry result.

EDTA, Oxalate and citrate depress results

Lipemic samples may contain inhibitors which falsely depress results

Benign ovarian cysts fluids may have significant amylase activity
