Storage Requirements

Refrigerate the sample if a delay (>1hr) in transportation to the laboratory is anticipated.

Deliver on ice if accompanied by CSF Lactic Acid.

Transportation Needs

Deliver specimen to the laboratory within 1 hour of collection. If not possible see “storage requirements”

Causes for Rejection

Mislabeled or unlabeled specimen

Specimen clotted

Specimen too viscous to analyze

Collected in wrong container

> 2 hours at Room Temperature

> 3 days Refrigerated

Limitations

Falsely decreased levels may result due to cellular and bacterial metabolism if the test is not performed immediately.

Visibly hemolyzed samples may give misleading results.

Low values are found only in about 50% of the cases of bacterial meningitis.

Bloody taps cause falsely increased glucose, since there is more glucose in blood.
