Limitations
Studies have shown glucose to be the least reliable of the tests for the diagnosis of bacterial peritonitis. More consistent glucose decrease is found in smaller, sequestered fluid collections such as those of meningitis (cerebrospinal fluid) and empyema (pleural fluid).
