Epic Test Code LAB195 Protein, Total: Spinal Fluid (CSF)
Performing Location(s)
BMC
Specimen Type
Spinal Fluid
Preferred Container
Reference Cerebrospinal Fluid Panels for Recommend Collection Tube
Minumum Volume to Submit for Testing
0.5 mL CSF
- Multiple test can be performed from this volume. For question please contact the lab at 547-3975.
Storage Requirements
Refrigerate the sample if a delay (>1hr) in transportation to the laboratory is anticipated.
Deliver on ice if accompanied by CSF Lactic Acid.
Transportation Needs
Deliver specimen to the laboratory within 1 hour of collection. If not possible see “Storage Requirements”
Causes for Rejection
Mislabeled or unlabeled specimen
Contaminated with blood
> 4 days at Room Temperature
> 4 days Refrigerated
Limitations
This methodology is prone to aminoglycoside interference. The presence of Neomycin, Gentamicin, Tobramycin, Kanamycin, Geneticin, Streptomycin, Amikacin and/or Dihydrostreptomycin will falsely increase the Protein result in specimens tested by this Fujita method.
Specimens with visible red cells or hemolysis should be avoided since hemolysis increases CSF Total Protein results (at 25 mg/dL hemoglobin)The sensitivity of the CSF Total Protein method is 2 mg/dL [20 mg/L] and represents the lowest concentration of cerebrospinal fluid protein that can be distinguished from zero. This sensitivity is defined as the concentration of two standard deviations above the 0 mg/dL [0 mg/L] level (n=20).
