Epic Test Code LAB21005 Lipase: Body Fluid

Performing Location(s)

BMC

Specimen Type

Body Fluid

Preferred Container

Red top tube

Alternate Container

Green top tube

Minimum Volume to Submit for Testing

0.5 mL Body Fluid

  • Multiple test can be performed from this volume. For question please contact the lab at 547-3975.

Storage Requirements

Sample tubes should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection, if bloody, followed by transfer to a labeled plastic, aliquot tube. If not bloody, send primary collection tube to lab.

Lipase is stable at room temperature for one week and three weeks at refrigerator temperature (2-8° C)

Transportation Needs

Deliver specimen to the laboratory within 1 hour of collection.

Causes for Rejection

Mislabeled or unlabeled specimen

Specimen grossly hemolyzed

Limitations

Bacterial contamination of the specimen may cause increased lipase values

Hemoglobin at a test concentration of 500 mg/dL [0.31 mmol/L] increases the lipase activity by 30 U/L at a lipase level of 143 U/L. Hemoglobin at a test concentration of 500 mg/dL [0.31 mmol/L] has less than 10% interference at lipase levels greater than 300 U/L.

EDTA, potassium oxalate, sodium fluoride and citrate have been shown to inhibit lipase results and should not be used.
Reference Range for body fluid is not established.

Additional Information

Contraindications:

Lipase is increased in approximately 50% of patients with chronic renal failure. Serum lipase increases with hemodialysis. Therefore, predialysis blood samples are recommended for lipase movement.

Methodology
