Epic Test Code LAB441 Protein, Total: Urine, 24 hour

Performing Location(s)

BMC

Specimen Type

24 hour urine

Preferred Container

24 hour urine with no preservative

Volume Required

Entire collection

At least 10 mL urine needs to be submitted to testing lab.

  • Multiple test can be performed from this volume. For question please contact the lab at 547-3975.

Storage Requirements

Keep urine refrigerated during the collection period.

Transportation Needs

Deliver specimen to the laboratory at the end of collection. If transportation is expected to exceed 1 hour, provisions must be made to keep the urine chilled

Causes for Rejection

Mislabeled or unlabeled specimen

Bloody specimens

Greater than 10% of total volume lost

Inappropriate urine preservative used

Specimen not refrigerated

>12 hrs Room Tempature
>24hrs Refrigerated

Limitations

This methodology is prone to aminoglycoside interference. The presence of Neomycin, Gentamicin, Tobramycin, Kanamycin, Geneticin, Streptomycin, Amikacin and/or Dihydrostreptomycin will falsely increase the Protein result in urines tested by this Fujita method.

Specimens with visible red cells or hemolysis should be avoided since hemolysis increases Urine/CSF Total Protein results (at 25 mg/dL hemoglobin)The sensitivity of the Urine/CSF Total Protein method is 2 mg/dL [20 mg/L] and represents the lowest concentration of urine or cerebrospinal fluid protein that can be distinguished from zero. This sensitivity is defined as the concentration of two standard deviations above the 0 mg/dL [0 mg/L] level (n=20).

Reference Values

Population Units Reference Range
All populations mg/24 hours <150

Reflex Testing

A urine creatinine (CPT: 82570) and output are performed and billed on all requests for 24 hour urine chemistries

Includes

Urine Total Protein, Urine Protein Output

Days of Analysis

All

Additional Information

Effective September, 2005, electrophoresis will no longer be performed on urines with a total protein <150 mg/24hrs. There is no clinical significance when the protein is low. Requests for urine electrophoresis received on specimens with Total Protein <150 mg/24hrs will be cancelled with the reason (“Total Protein <150 mg/24hrs”).
