Transportation Needs

Deliver specimen to laboratory within 1 hour of collection if unspun. If not possible see "storage Requirements". 

Storage Requirements

Primary specimen tubes should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection followed by transfer of the serum (red or gold top) to a labeled plastic, aliquot tube.

Limitations

  • Patients who are negative for HBsAg may still have acute type B viral hepatitis. There is sometimes a window stage when HBsAg has become negative and the patient has not yet developed the antibody (anti-HBsAg)
  • A negative result does not exclude the possibility of exsposure or infection with hepatitis B virus. A negative result in individuals with prior exposure to hepatitis B may be due to test antigen levels below the detection limit of the assay or lack of specificity. Some assys will not detect all HBV mutants

  • Transient positive HBsAg can occur in patients following HBV vaccination. Positivity from a recent HBV vaccination may persist beyond 14-30 days post-vaccination depending upon the patient’s renal status.

  • Performance of this assy has not been established with cord blood, neonatal speciemens, cadaver specimens or other body fluids
  • Specimens from patient who have received mouse monoclonal antibodies (HAMA) for diagnosis or therapy may exhibit either falsely elevated or depressed levels.
  • Hydrophobic antibodies in human serum may interfere, and additional info may be needed for specimens from patients with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Additional Information

This test is not available on a STAT basis or off-hours, weekends or holidays. If an emergency request is necessary, call 3731 for availability. Pathologist approval may be required.

Certain assys will not detect all HBV mutants. If acute HBV infection is suspected and HBS Ag is negative, it is recommended that other HBV serology markers be tested to confirm HBs Ag nonreactivitiy
