Storage Requirements
Sample tubes should be centrifuged within 2 hour of collection followed by transfer of the serum (red or gold top) to a labeled plastic, aliquot tube.

Deliver specimen to laboratory within 1 hour of collection if unspun. If not possible see "storage Requirements".

Limitations
When result is Non-reactive: No laboratory evidence of syphilis infection. If recent exposure is suspected, re-draw specimen in 2-4 weeks and order RPR with reflex (LAB4941).
When result is Reactive: Non-treponmal antibodies detected. Syphilis infection unlikely; biologic false positive likely. Clinical evaluation should be performed to identify signs, symptoms or past history of infection. If recent exposure is suspected, re-draw specimen in 2-4 weeks and order RPR with reflex (LAB4941).

Reflex Testing
When an RPR screen is reactive, a titer will be performed and billed.
When an RPR screen is reactive, the specimen will be sent to the reference laboratory for confirmatory testing TP-PA (CPT: 86780)

Additional Information:
A reactive RPR is a NYSDOH reportable communicable disease. The NYSDOH will be notified of all positive RPR’s.
This test is not available on a STAT basis.
