The ESR is subject to many interferences. It is affected by a high WBC count, increased fibrinogen, abnormal RBC’s, variances in room temperature, transport time, and certain drugs. With the exception its use as a monitor for certain rheumatologic conditions, a C-reactive protein test (CRP) may be considered a replacement for the ESR

Specimen must be tested within 12 hours of collection. Add-on requests for specimens older than 12 hours will not be performed. It is suggested that the clinician consider ordering a C-reactive protein test
