Limitations

The following substances have less than 10% effect on the FERR method:

1. icterus (bilirubin 60 mg/dL [1026 µmol/L])

2. hemolysis (hemoglobin 1000 mg/dL [0.62 mmol/L](monomer))

3. lipemia (triglyceride 3000 mg/dL [33.9 mmol/L]).

 

Patients taking biotin supplements in excess of the daily recommended allowance may cause falsely elevated results.
