Preferred Container

Gold or Red top tube

Alternate Container

Green top tube

Volume Required

0.5 mL (Serum)

Storage Requirements

Avoid repeated freezing and thawing.

Transportation Needs

Deliver specimen to the laboratory within 1 hour of collection.

The following substances have less than 10% effect on the FERR method:

1. icterus (bilirubin 60 mg/dL [1026 µmol/L])

2. hemolysis (hemoglobin 1000 mg/dL [0.62 mmol/L](monomer))

3. lipemia (triglyceride 3000 mg/dL [33.9 mmol/L]).

Patients taking biotin supplements in excess of the daily recommended allowance may cause falsely elevated results.
