Transportation Needs
Deliver specimen to laboratory within 1 hour of collection if unspun. If not possible see "storage Requirements".
Storage Requirements
Sample tubes should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection followed by transfer of the serum to a labeled plastic aliquot tube.

Patient Preparation:
Patient should be fasting overnight. Collect prior to transfusion or initiation of folate therapy.

Additional Information:
Serum levels of folate are affected by present dietary intake
Drugs that are folate antagonists, such as methotrexate and pentamide, may induce a deficiency state.
Some drugs such as oral contraceptives, phenytoin, and ethanol impair absorption of folate
Usually measured with Vitamin B12 levels.
This test is not available on a STAT basis. If an emergency request is necessary, call 3731 for availablity. Pathologist approval may be required.
