Limitations

Secretion of both LH and FSH are pulsatile, in response to the normal intermittent release of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) in females, both FSH and LH vary over the course of the menstrual cycle, with peaks at time of ovulation. Thus, interpretation of a single determination may be difficult.

Decreased in patients receving oral contraceptives, estrogens and testosterone

Additional Information

NOTE: Serum specimens are good for 3 days if stored at refrigerated temperature (2-8° Celsius). Specimens that will not be tested within 3 days should be stored frozen at -20° Celsius or below.

Plasma specimens are stable for 24 hours at room temperature
