Epic Test Code LAB883A Blood Parasite Exam

Important Note

Receiving laboratoty send testing STAT to Albany Med Via STAT Courier. Notify AMC that the specimen is coming. 518-262-4549. Make sure that an AMC requisition accompanies the specimen.

All samples received for the test blood parasite exam will first be screened for Plasmodium species using a rapid antigen test.

Specimen Type

Whole Blood - Dark Lavender top tube Plus 3 unstained thin smears and 3 unstained thick smears.

Blood Tube Draw Volume

Min 50% draw volume

5.0 mL whole blood

Specimen Preparation

Travel history, suspected vector transmission or suspected disease required. 

Required sample to be sent to AMC - 3 unstained thin smears, 3 unstained thick smears and the purple top tube, prepared within 1 hour of collection.

Preparing Slides for Blood Parasites 

Transportation

Maintain at room temperature.
If specimen is collected in a non lab Transport specimen to nearest Bassett lab at room temperature within 45 min of collection. 
Reciving labTransport specimen to AMC lab at room temperature within 6 hours of collection. 
Do not freeze or centrifuge specimen

Mislabeled or unlabeled specimen
Less than 50% draw for Vacutainer tubes
Frozen Specimen
Refrigerated Specimen 
> 6hrs old
Purple top without prepared slides >1 hour old
