Causes for Rejection
Mislabeled or unlabeled specimen
Less than 50% draw for Vacutainer tubes
> 5 days Refigerated
> 24 hours Room Temperature
Heparinized Plasma Stabel 3 days at 20-25C Frozen at ≥ 70C for 3 months
Hemolysis > 50 mg/dL HgB
Lipemia > 1000 mg/dL Trig
Bilirubin > 40 mg/dL Bili
EDTA, NaF or Oxalate
Limitations
Hemolysis elevates LD results. Hemoglobin of 500 mg/dL [0.31 mmol/L (monomer)] will increase the LDH activity by 20 U/L at an LDH activity of 300 U/L.
Capillary collected blood may differ from venous due to contamination from hemolysis or interstitial fluid.
Extended refrigeration can lead to loss of labile LDH isoenzymes 4 and 5.
