SPECIMEN COLLECTION for COVID-19 by ABBOTT ID NOW
Use BD BBL CultureSwab EZ II (storeroom item 554408) only
(This contains TWO swabs in one plastic sleeve)
- Tilt patient’s head back 70 degrees.
- Insert both swabs at least 1 cm (0.5 inch) inside the nostril (naris) and firmly sample the nasal membrane by rotating the swabs and leaving in place for 10 to 15 seconds. (if you meet a point of resistance at turbinates–do NOT advance further). Sample both nostrils with both swabs.
Note: proper collection is key to obtaining accurate results.
- Return swabs to the plastic sleeve, and firmly seat the cap.
Do NOT put into Viral Transport Media or Saline. - All tubes must be labeled with patient first and last name, DOB, and date of collection. If computer labels are not available at collection, hand label with patient’s first and last name, date of birth or MRN (if known). HAND WRITE DATE AND TIME OF COLLECTION AND INITIALS of collector.
Transportation Needs
Deliver specimen to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection.
Reference Values
Result |
Interpretation |
Negative |
Negative results should be treated as presumptive and, if inconsistent with clinical signs and symptoms or necessary for patient management, should be tested with an alternative molecular assay. A negative results does not preclude the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 infection since the adequacy of sample collection and/or low viral burden may result in the presence of viral nucleic acids below the analytical sensitivity of this method. This test is intended for testing a swab directly without elution in viral transport media. A negative result does not rule out co-infections with other pathogens, Test results should be used with other clinical, laboratory and epidemiological data in making the diagnosis. |
Invalid |
The presence or absence of COVID-19 viral RNA cannot be determined. Re-collect a new specimen for repeat testing. |
Positive |
Positive results are indicative of the presence of SARS-CoV-2, but does not rule out co-infection with other pathogens. Test results should be used with other clinical, laboratory and epidemiological data in making the diagnosis. |
Causes for Rejection
Mislabeled or unlabeled specimens
Unlabeled
Specimen in VTM or Saline
>1 hours at room temp
Cotton or Standard Rayon swab
Storage Requirements
Place collected, properly labeled specimens into a specimen bag. Transport immediately to the testing area. Sample must remain at room temerature and need to be run or delivered to clinical lab within 45 min of collection.
Limitations
- Patients should be tested within the first seven days of onset of symptoms.
- False negative results may occur if a specimen is improperly collected, transported or handled. False negative results may also occur if amplification inhibitors are present in the specimen or if inadequate levels of virus are present in the specimen.
- As with any molecular test, if the virus mutates in the target region, COVID-19 may not be detected or may be detected less predictably.
- This test cannot rule disease caused by other bacterial or viral pathogens.
