Epic Test Code LAB21115 Bilirubin Fractionation

Performing Location(s)

BMC,FOX,FTT,CRH,LFH,OCH,FXCC,HRK

Specimen Type

Serum or Plasma

Preferred Container

Gold or Red top tube

Alternate Container

Green top

Minimum Volume to Submit for Testing

0.5 mL Serum or Plasma

  • Multiple test can be performed from this volume. For question please contact the lab at 547-3975.

Storage Requirements

Bilirubin is extremely photosensitive. A 50% decrease in bilirubin within 1 hour has been reported for samples exposed to direct sunlight. For optimal stability, serum samples should be stored in the darkness (or wrapped in foil) at low temperatures refrigerated

Microtainer tubes should be centrifuged within 2 hour of collection. Serum from microtainer collection tubes does NOT require transfer to another tube

See Causes of Rejection for temperature requirements.

Transportation Needs

Deliver specimen to laboratory within 1 hour of collection if unspun. If not possible see "storage Requirements".

Causes for Rejection

Mislabeled or unlabeled specimen

Less than 50% draw for Vacutainer tubes

>3 days refrigerated
>24 hours Room Tempature
>3 months Frozen
Hemolysis > 25 mg/dL HgB
Lipemia > 500 mg/dL Trig
Protect from light, stable 8 hours unprotected
Hemolysis criteria does not apply if ordered as Bilirubin Fractionation: Pediatric

Limitations

Bilirubin is extremely photosensitive. A 50% decrease in bilirubin within 1 hour has been reported for samples exposed to direct sunlight

Hemolyzed specimens are unacceptable for direct bilirubin testing.
