Pink top tubes: Specimens from outreach centers should be kept refrigerated prior to and during shipment.
Do NOT centrifuge or separate plasma from cells.

Specimens should be sent to lab promptly. If not possible, see Storage Requirements, above.

All specimens submitted to Blood Bank as separate and holds will be assessed for collection and labeling requirements and accuracy. If acceptable, specimens will then be stored for 3 days during which time they may be used for any requested blood bank testing.

Additional Information:
An MIBH Separate and Hold may be converted to a Cardiac Type and Screen by ordering CTS as an add on test or on Downtime Lab Req#3 within 3 days from date of specimen collection.
An additional (1) 6ml Pink (EDTA) top tube must be collected, hand labeled and sent to the Blood Bank.
An MIBH Separate and Hold may be converted to a Cardiac Crossmatch by ordering CRCP as an Add On Test within 3 days from date of specimen collection.
An additional (1) 6ml Pink (EDTA) top tube must be collected, hand labeled and sent to the Blood Bank.
A Separate and Hold may be converted to an RCP order which includes a TSC and XM (crossmatch) if the patient has been wristbanded (see Outpatient wristband policy) by ordering RCP as an Add On Test 3 within 3 days from date of specimen collection.
A Separate and Hold may be converted to a TSC by ordering TSC as an Add On Test within 3 days from date of specimen collection.
If atypical antibodies are detected additional specimen may be requested by the Blood Bank in order to complete testing.

A Green C Label should be placed on any Blood Bank specimen drawn on a patient who may be going to the Cardiac Cath Lab or who is a possible candidate for cardiac surgery. This will alert the Blood Bank to perform additional testing necessary for Cardiac Surgery Patients.
