Additional Information

Patient Instructions for Fasting Laboratory Testing
Contraindications:

Interpretation of cholesterol levels drawn after or during unusual events in the patients life are limited. (ie. inpatient stay, surgery, myocardial infarct, etc.)

Unusual stress and unusual (for the patient) diet will change phenotypes and may change HDL cholesterol.

Lipid evaluations probably should not be made for at least 6 months following a myocardial infarct or following surgery.

Even moderate alcohol intake may cause lipid studies to be abnormal for as long as 5 days.

Additional Information:

It is preferred but not required that the patient be fasting for 12-14 hours prior to specimen collection.

This test is not available on a STAT basis. If an emergency request is necessary, call 3731 for availability. Pathologist approval may be required

To request a Total Cholesterol only, see entry for “LAB60:Cholesterol, Total
To request an HDL Cholesterol only, see entry for “LAB101:Cholesterol, HDL
To request a triglyceride only, see entry for “LAB134:Triglyceride
To order a measured (direct) LDL Cholesterol only, see entry for “LAB102:Cholesterol, LDL

Includes

Total Cholesterol

HDL Cholesterol

A Calculated LDL Cholesterol is included if the TRIG is < 400 mg/dL. If the TRIG is ≥400 mg/dl a measured LDL is reflexively ordered tested and billed.
