Storage Requirements

Sample tubes should be centrifuged within 2 hour of collection followed by transfer of the serum (red or gold top) or plasma (green top) to a labeled plastic, aliquot tube.

Transportation Needs

Deliver specimen to the laboratory within 1 hour of collection. If not possible see “Storage Requirements”

Mislabeled or unlabeled specimen
Less than 50% draw for Vacutainer tubes

Plasma > 24 hours room temperature

No Add-ons to unopened serum > 24 hours refrigerated

No Add-ons to opened serum > 12 hours refrigerated

Additional Information

Testing should occur as soon as possible and not > 24 hours after receipt at MIB

Can NOT add-on osmolality after aliquot has been opened and re-capped after 12 hours due to sensitivity to evaporation.
